    • Definition of Reproduction

The production of new individuals of the same kind from their parents is called reproduction.

      Importance of reproduction:
      1. It helps in survival of species.
      2. Without reproduction life would not be possible.
      3. It helps in genetic diversity.

The different modes in which reproduction takes place depends on the various parts of the plant.

Let us understand the different parts of plants.

    • Parts of plant & their sub-types:

      Parts

In the previous classes, we have learnt the functions & importance of these parts of plants.

Let's revise their function in brief:

      Parts of Plant Function
Stem Transports water & minerals from the soil to the different parts.
Transports food from the leaves to the different parts.
      Support the plant.
Roots Absorption of water & minerals from the soil.
Leaves Preparation of food through photosynthesis.
Fruits Protect the seeds & helps in seed dispersal.
Flowers Reproductive parts of the plant.
      Producing fruits & seeds.
      Attracting pollinators.

Based on these plant parts, there are two major types of reproduction.

    • The two major types of reproduction are:

Let's understand each type & their sub type in detail.

      To remember:
      • Reproduction is the process by which living organisms produce young ones of their own kind.
      • Reproduction is essential for species survival.
      • Two types of reproduction are: asexual & sexual.
